At the end of blockbuster season, Ain’t Them Bodies Saints is the perfect palette cleanser. A breathtaking, timeless tale of doomed romance and impeccable atmosphere, the film is reviewed in the latest issue of Vérité Magazine (page 58). Our own David Hall called it “one of the most exquisitely shot films of 2013” and “a future American classic”. Drawing inspiration from many of the classics of American literature and film, Lowery’s film is like something from another era. With only his second feature it feels as though the one time mumblecore editor been directing as long as the greats. No ordinary filmmaker, he’s a storyteller in the grandest tradition.
On the day of the film’s UK release I was lucky enough to chat with Lowery via Skype where he was promoting the film in France. He was very generous with his time and our discussion covered a whole range of topics, including the enduring filmmaker friendships made at the SXSW Festival, the experience of working with movie stars like Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara and the lighting design of some of the best nighttime exteriors ever shot.
